Second Year Strong: Celebrating UJ's 20 Year and My Journey

 As I reflect on the University of Johannesburg's 20th Anniversary, I am proud to say that I am part of the Orange Army. One thing that I have learned is that persistence is key. after all those years of being rejected in universities, I never lost hope, I never thought I would be this fortunate to have the opportunity to be part of this revered institution. Yet here I am, flourishing as a student and enjoying the advantages of UJ’s academic quality, creativity, and community involvement. UJ@20 signifies twenty years of commitment to nurturing future leaders and change-makers. As a UJ student, I have witnessed directly the influence that the university exerts on its students, the community, and society. 

Personal Growth and Academic Excellence 

Being a Public Relations student at the University of Johannesburg did not just help me grow academically; it also contributed to boosting my self-esteem and self-confidence, as this field is all about building and maintaining relationships, not forgetting presenting to a lot of people. I have developed new skills like communication, research, problem-solving, and advertising. 

Additionally, the knowledge and abilities I have acquired have not been confined to the classroom, even in my corporate environment where I most likely do my part-time jobs during the festive season or school holidays, public relations has shaped the way I behave in the workplace externally and internally in terms of being aware of the values in an organisation for instance inclusivity, making sure that everyone is included and able to voice out their thoughts and come up with ideas, having shared values in encouraging positive work environment and showing empathy to others in terms of being emotionally there for each other, this led to excellent customer services and excellent team work in an organisation. 

Community Engagement and Social Development 

UJ’s commitment to community involvement and social progress is genuinely admirable. According to UJ about us (n.d.), the university’s multiple initiatives have markedly influenced the community, and I have been lucky to be involved in these initiatives. By engaging in activities, for instance, educational programs for children in local communities, I have discovered the importance of giving back to the community and fostering a sense of social responsibility.

Additionally, UJ’s engagement is beyond campus limits, providing residents in local communities with an opportunity to showcase their talent. By hosting sports trials, the university offers skilled individuals the opportunity to excel, regardless of their connection to UJ. This approach not only fosters talent but also encourages community unity. UJ’s dedication to fostering positive change and developing social awareness in its students is clear through its various community projects and outreach efforts.  

Hopes for the Future 

As the University of Johannesburg marks its 20th anniversary, I am eager to witness what lies ahead for this distinguished institution. As Professor Letlhokwa Mpedi, the vice chancellor and Principal, has stated, this year is notable as we implement UJ’s strategic plan 2035, a framework designed to steer this University through the upcoming decade20th. 

Expanding on earlier strategies that established UJ as a frontrunner in cultivating individuals and technologies suitable for the fourth industrial revolution, the strategic plan 2035 focuses on social impact and sustainability. It guarantees a distinct emphasis on technology and the future while highlighting humanity at all levels. We will remain a top university that provides advanced programs designed for future careers while also ensuring we have a real impact on the world around us. (Mapedi, 2025). 

The institution is not just celebrating its 20 years of existence, we are celebrating the achievements, growth, and the impact the university has, not just in the university community but also outside UJ. AS a UJ student, I am proud to be part of this journey and looking forward to seeing the university flourish.
